Serengeti Safari in Tanzania
Hello guys and welcome to our post today, "Serengeti Safari in Tanzania". The Serengeti is an UNCESCO world heritage site and one of the most famous and renowned national parks in all of Africa.
It is the Serengeti that inspires people from all over the world to dream of a Safari in Tanzania. The name Serengeti means "endless plain" and covers approximately 15,000 square kilometers. It has the largest kingdom of animals in the world in one place. This fact alone should highlight the sheer vastness of the Serengeti.
The Lion| Serengeti Safari in Tanzania
The Lion is the ruler on the vast plains of the Serengeti. There are about 2,000 of these majestic creatures on the endless plain. The Lion is the only member of the cat family that lives in a group known as a pride. Also, a lioness feeds other offspring, not just her own. It is believed that this practice strengthens the young's immune systems. The lion is undoubtedly the king of the Serengeti however the survival rate of the young lions is very low indeed. 8 out 10 lions die in the first 2 years of life. The reason for this low survival rate is the harsh environment they are born into. This highlights that nature is the true ruler of the plains.
The Hyena | Serengeti Safari in Tanzania
The hyena is the most numerous carnivore in the Serengeti. They are the scavengers of Africa and can smell blood up to 20 km away. The hyena is known to hunt on their own but they mainly plunder the catch of others. They truly are the outlaws of the Savannah.
These laughing creatures are formidable for, even for the mighty lion. The lion can handle up to four Hyenas on their own, but when the hyenas are in a large group, they will surely take the lion's kill for their own.
The Leopard | Serengeti Safari in Tanzania
The leopard is the safest from the plundering Hyena on the plains. The reason for this, is that the leopard can climb and possess enormous strength and have the capacity to take a 45 kg kill up into the trees. The Leopard has hook- shaped claws and are born climbers. They spend most of their day sleeping high in trees, off the damp grass.
The Leopard does not have to worry about their food being stolen. This does not happen to the Leopard on the Serengeti as they hang their kills in the trees, enjoying the fruits of their labor for days.
The Cheetah| Serengeti Safari in Tanzania
The Cheetah is the fastest land animal alive, they can run up to speeds of 112km/hr 70mph. However, even though it has this gift of speed, the cheetah lacks endurance and strength. The Cheetah must conclude a fight within 5.6 km or its body temperature will rise to dangerous levels which can be fatal for the Cheetah. Once the cheetah has killed its prey it must eat quickly as it does not possess the power to fight off scavengers like the Hyena.
The Cheetah can produce 3-4 offspring at a time. The cheetah will stay with her offspring throughout the night, but only visits them once a day to feed. The reason for this, is she does not want to alert the hyena or the Lion of the young cheetahs’ existence. The lion or the Hyena will kill their competitors’ young if they know they are close bye. Nature can be cruel and you will see it at its best on your "Serengeti Safari in Tanzania".
